The implementation of the YoungDrive Academy program in Kamuli is up and running. Together with the project leaders we have been out on the field to visit and support the coaches on their first meeting with their youth groups. The first session of the program focus on inspiration, dreams, strengths, entrepreneurship and team building.
The notion of YoungDrive Academy is to “Dream Big and start small” and the youth are definitely dreaming big! They are dreaming about becoming a member of the parliament, artist, successful businesswomen and businessman, nurse, lawyer, policeman, tailor, teacher and farmer. Moreover they dreaming about buying a house, be able to give their children good education, take driver’s license, driving their own car and go to Sweden or America someday.

Let´s do it again! – YoungDrive is back in Kamuli, Uganda, this year as well.

After carrying out a successful pilot project last year (2014) in Kamuli, Uganda YoungDrive Academy and Plan International decided that it’s time to get to business and train the future entrepreneurs of Kamuli!

We started off with an intense and fun project leader training resulting in six new YoungDrive Academy project leaders ready to put their new skills into action during the next step of the project – the coach training. A full loaded and exciting week where we trained 27 persons from different communities in Kamuli region to become YoungDrive Academy coaches. The main focus of the training was coaching skills and how to be a good and inspiring coach. We also got through the different topics of YoungDrive Academy program, such as business idea, marketing, sales, financial literacy and team building.

Now the coaches are ready to try out their new role and implement the YoungDrive Academy program to their youth groups so they gain more entrepreneur- and business skills and experience and can start their own businesses in Kamuli!

The implementation of the YoungDrive Academy program here in Uganda is in full swing and I have been out on the field to visit and support the coaches in their first experience of coaching the youths in the program. The first session of the program focus on inspiration, dreams and entrepreneurship.

Youths here dream about becoming doctors, engineers, successful businesswomen and businessman, pilots, buying a house, take drivers license, driving their own car and to be able to give their kids good education. So it is not so far of what youths in Sweden dream of, to get successful in life, to start and run a successful business or to get a good job.

One of the groups that I visited had made a welcome and good bye song for our visit that they greeted us with on our arrival. There is no lack of creativity when it comes to music here! Singing and dancing is a important part of the culture.  Check out the video below!

Some of the youth groups already have business projects going on, many within the agriculture area, one group I visited grows passionfruit and another was doing ventilated bricks. Others do handicrafts and producing things from banana fiber. This is great because then they can work on getting their business to be more profitable and successful and for the groups and persons that doesn’t have any ideas yet that is what we will work on next week!

The next step for the coaches is now to try out their new roll and their new found skills and implement the YoungDrive Academy program to their youths in their communities and villages. The youths in the villages are organized into different saving groups which they meet up in every week to save some money together. By saving each group have creates their own saving fund and can take small loans from that fund to do invest in a business idea for example. Each coach have a number of youth saving groups that they work with and now they will take the youths in their youth groups through YoungDrive Academy Program so they can gain more entrepreneur- and business skills and experience.
